of well known colours
Red
is associated with the fire element, warmth and summer. Red is the colour of alertness and movement. It is useful when you need
to move energy around.
Red is perceived as a colour of strength. It is said to stimulate physical
activity and vitality, feelings of self-esteem, confidence and recognition.
Red is the colour of our blood, it represents lifes nourishment,
invigorating the body and feeding the mind with vital oxygen. Infra red
is used to speed up the healing process.
Use red in rooms where activity is required. If you have a tendency
to tire easily in the office - splashes of red objects or decor
can help to keep you active!
Red can induce anger and aggression the saying like red rag
to a bull has a firm psychological basis. So red is not advisable
for hyperactive, violent or aggressive people. It is also unsuitable when
relaxation is the priority for a particular room or area or garment.
We also use the term in the red to denote financial problems.
The red light is well known for its sexual connotations. Red is certainly
a colour to use with care!
The red heart symbol represents passionate love. If you want passion in
your life make a gift of a red flower. Wear red accessories. Put your
wish list in a red envelope to make sure that it comes true!
Pink Softer tones of red give the
more receptive pink. Pink is often
associated with feminine values, peacemaking and romantic love. It is
the colour of gentle flowers and rose quartz crystals. Bright cerise pinks
are daring, sexy and stimulating. Pale pinks are restful and calming.
Pink can also be harmless and fun pink elephants, pink panthers
and Lily the Pink.
Orange is a mixture of fire and earth
elements. It is sometimes known
as the happiness colour and can also signify independence and optimism.
Orange is said to govern your sexuality and physical performance.
Use orange in playrooms, places for exercise and dance, and for social
gathering areas where you can celebrate life. Avoid orange if you have
an addictive personality. Wear orange for fun. Eat orange foods for vigour.
Yellow is associated with the earth
element, health, honesty and
longevity. Yellow helps to centre us so that we are connected with our
inner power. It has the capability to transform blue to green and red
to
orange. Likewise it can help you to make changes in your life while
remaining grounded and receptive to reason.
Yellow is said to be the colour of knowing and communicating your intuitive
'gut feelings'. It stimulates mental clarity, verbal reasoning and will
power.
Use yellow in places of learning, where social gatherings take
place and lively conversation is required. Nature uses yellow
for a variety of attractive flowers, but combines it with black
to act as a danger signal.
Do not use too much yellow if you are prone to stress and find it difficult
to switch off mentally. Yellow is said to be related to the solar plexus
chakra which links with our emotions yellow is sometimes associated
with fear, on the other hand sunshine yellow has a cheery quality which
enlivens the spirit.
Green is associated with the wood
element and spring. Green symbolises new growth and adaptability. It encourages
flexibility in life without losing strength and stability - like a tree
with its roots firmly grounded but swaying in the wind!
Green promotes positive feelings, compassion and sensitivity. It governs
the heart and loving relationships - its reverse nature is associated
with envy and jealousy. Fresh green stimulates incoming ideas, creativity
and the ability to accept change.
Use pale green in rooms where sensitivity is needed or activities involving
physical touch. It is also good to emphasise family values and respect
for family or community members. Avoid green in rooms where detached analytical
thinking is required. Healthy plants are an ideal way to bring green to
indoor environments.
Blue is associated with the
water element and winter. Blue is the colour of principles, justice
and ideals. Blue is good for logical thought and good verbal communication
it is linked with the throat chakra of eastern medicine.
Bright blue is said to promote altruism. The printed word presented
in blue, rather than black, can be very persuasive!
Blue is a 'safe' colour for blending in and is therefore recommended for
business suits when a thoughtful appearance and non-confrontational demeanour
is required. [Red has the opposite effect!]
Blue light and blue surroundings are good for soothing the mind and dissipating
headaches. Use blue in rooms where you want to relax like bedrooms and
clinics.
Remember that bright electric blues are more stimulating than
calm pale blues, and that too much blue can make a room feel cold
and isolating.
Blue can reflect lifes problems - Im feeling blue
and playing the blues. On the other hand a rich cornflower
blue makes people smile!
Purple stimulates artistic and imaginative
activities. It is associated
with spiritual and psychic awareness. Purple combines the elements of
fire and water in perfect balance.
Purple can be used in moderation to inspire intuitive thought - the so-called
sixth sense. It is particularly favourable in combination with silver
indicating good fortune.
Use purple in rooms where you want to inspire aesthetic creativity or
meditation. However be warned that too much purple can lead to impracticality,
day-dreaming and illusions!
Purple is the colour of kings and is worn ceremonially to denote the highest
authority. If you want to feel important try a flash of purple!
Black is the total lack of colour.
It represents your hidden potential and the possibility of all things
on life's journey. Black as night allows the potential for
appreciating light both metaphorically and in the form of celestial
bodies.
Danger, passion and risk are linked with black yet without risk
life is stale! Black can be sombre and black can denote evil but it can
also be chic and very dramatic, especially in combination white or silver.
Too much black will make an area seem smaller - a useful tool for womens
garments!
White is associated with the metal
element and autumn in the Chinese tradition. It symbolises the soul returning
to the light when someone dies.
White is the synthesis of all the other colours and is considered
dynamic and vibrant. White enhances clear vision. It allows you
to simplify your surroundings and gives you the single-mindedness
to complete projects - the fruition of your creativity. Too much
white can give a stark appearance to a room which some people
find unwelcoming. With careful use of pictures, objects and textiles,
a mainly white decor can give a wonderful result.
Hang a crystal in a south facing window and see the white light being
refracted into the colours of the rainbow which will decorate your walls!
Allow the beam to focus on your 'middle eye' - think strong thoughts about
the miracle of life that is 'you'. Your self-esteem and confidence will
be reinforced.
Silver represents secret desires and
intuition, particularly in combination with purple. Silver is precious
and so are the spaces which incorporate this colour.
The silvery moon is hypnotically special and seems to affect our psyche.
Gold is the colour of long-term ambitions,
courage and wealth. Used
subtly it signifies opulence and good taste. Golden light is uplifting.
Brown is natures carpet
of soil, fallen leaves and decaying matter. It is also a support
colour for animals and plants. Use brown sparingly in your home
decor as it can be rather drab. However it signifies the home
and finances in a supportive way. Brown wood fuels our fire -
symbolically from the everyday comes the extra-ordinary. Surprise
yourself!
